Defensible Space

More than dirt and gravel!

Studies have shown that you can have healthy, vibrant and water-rich landscapes which offer superb fire and ember protection.

Home Hardening involves removing fuels surrounding your home.

Ember Protection

Keeping out the red devils

We know up to 90-percent of WUI house fire losses are caused by burning embers igniting your attic and crawl space, or sneaking through small cracks. Let's make your home a robust defensible home, for less cost.

Heat Protection

Stop house-to-house ignition

When a neighbor's home or vegetation is within 30-feet, your home is susceptible to radiant heat ignition.  Go beyond Home Hardening and deploy a Linear Water Curtain using sprinklers or fan nozzles to protect these exposures. Its the same technology used INSIDE commercial buildings.

Water Storage Alternatives

A pool is a luxury item, until you need stored water. Then your pool can save your home, property and maybe even your life. But consider these alternatives to a swimming pool:

Emergency Storage

temp pond.png

When money is tight, you can build a temporary water storage pond in a low spot or dug-out area in your yard.  Use 6 mil poly sheeting or buy more durable pond liner online.  Be sure to add 2 feet around the edges to anchor the liner with dirt or rocks.

Find a spot where you can store at least 2,500 gallons of water at a depth of 18-inches.

To store 2,500 gallons, you'll need a depression that covers 225 square feet for 18-inch storage.  This is a square about 15x15 feet.

To store 5,000 gallons, 450 square feet is needed, or an area about 21x21-feet.

Permanent Storage

Ponds, lakes and streams are valuable resources if you have them. A typical 5,000 gallon tank will cost about $6,000. Above ground pools are inexpensive and hold over 5,000 gallons such as this one from Costco, which is less than $800.

For tanks and pools, order a 2-1/2 inch bulkhead fitting and install a ball valve and male NH fitting on the side near the bottom for fire department access.  To connect only our FyreWagon suction hose, you'll need an adapter and female 2 inch Camlock fitting.

Seasonal Storage

Containment pro 2500.png

We first saw this product on jobsites where concrete and contaminated liquids were stored.  When asked how it could be adapted for water storage, they quickly went to work to build us a custom version with a heavy-duty 4-inch valve connection and two sizes to suit our needs.

You simply unfold the container and start filling it up.  It is self-supported and requires no tools.  The heat-welded seams and heavy-duty construction holds up to abuse and resists punctures. Just throw a chlorine tablet in every couple of weeks and store water throughout the fire season. Then, drain and store for the next season.  You can cover it with a tarp to keep out debris if deploying it all season.

Robust Home Defense offers 2,500 and 5,000 gallon sizes.

We deliver these containers already equipped with the necessary fittings to connect directly to our FyreWagon system.  Order Now!

The Water Sharing Agreement

A typical swimming pool holds the equivalent of 50 fire trucks, and is right at the fire scene to be quickly used.  Consider sharing this incredible resource with a neighbor by using our "Water Sharing Agreement". Consider these facts:

  • It's free!  You can share equipment resources, manpower or provide compensation if water is used
  • Reduce house-to-house ignition
  • An adjacent structure produces 200x more heat energy than a wildfire
  • An adjacent structure produces 10x more embers
  • Your neighbor helps protect your home when you are away
  • You help protect your neighbor's home
  • A Water Sharing Agreement spells out all options and liabilities
  • Mutual Aid between neighbors leverages resources, creates redundancy
  • You both receive higher FireRisk Insurance scores-potentially lower insurance costs!
